Some brides start planning for their nuptials a year in advance but if your wedding is much sooner than that there is no reason to panic.  Your flower order can be sent to the wholesaler a month before your wedding and you will still get what you want in most cases.  Your colors are generally more important than the type of flowers.  Once you've decided on your dress, have the site of your nuptials & reception reserved and your colors chosen then it's time to schedule a consultation for your flowers.  Think about your personal style and how you would describe it.  Maybe you are wine and chocolate or frilly pink or minimally modern or maybe exotic. It's always helpful if you bring images of your preferences to your consultation.
